Background

In an interview with DIE ANGRY, Quinlan reveals that the track is mostly about their friend who traveled to India.

A live demo of the song was performed in 2010, apparently along with several more early performances of some tracks.

A music video for the song was created on May 31st, 2012, making it their debut music video. The music video was uploaded only to the producer's YouTube channel. Frances Quinlan was the set designer for the video, likely using the mostly unused frames from creating the pop-up book style cover for Get Disowned's album cover. Frances, Mark, and Tyler all contributed to puppeteering the birds.

The track has recieved a notable amount of praise; Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 calls the track "the most painfully beautiful song ever," and the track has made multiple best emo song lists from notable sources, such as Vulture and The Ringer.

Arguably, Hop Along never wrote another emo song again, but "Tibetan Pop Stars" so succinctly summed up everything great about the genre they never needed to.

The track is also Hop Along's most popular release on Spotify (sans their Queen Ansleis releases), with over 12 million listens.

Lyrics

How content are the ones with simple demands
They meet their fiancés cherry picking out in Canada
While cruising the river, a seven fingered man
His three sleepless wives all equally sick of him

Honey, I left to see some action
What's with all this swamp?
All I'm passing are hospitals and space camps
Nobody is asking me, "What about your other?"
If they did, I'd tell them you're a

Stranger in India
I'm gonna be creeping on you so hard
You're seducing Tibetan pop stars and
Wrecking motor cars

I know it's true
This is wrong, love
Why is everything so expensive?
Maybe in two years, you can forgive me
I'll be living kinder
I'll have found my place as a

Stranger in India
I'm gonna be creeping on you so hard
You're seducing Tibetan pop stars and
Wrecking motor cars

A stranger in India
Doing okay so far
I'm just waiting on the feathers and tar
You are the only one
You are

Nobody deserves you the way that I do
Nobody deserves you the way that I do
Nobody deserves you the way that I do, and
Nobody deserves you the way that I do

Come home, stranger in India
Because waiting on you is too hard
The reason I haven't written back is because
I'm doing all that bad shit I was

My love is average
I obey an average law, law
My love is average
I obey an average law, law, law
Law, law, law

How content are the ones with simple demands
They meet their fiancés cherry picking out in Canada
All while cruising the river, a seven fingered man
His three sleepless wives all equally sick of him

Honey, I left to see some action
What's with all this swamp?
All I'm passing are hospitals and space camps
Nobody is asking me, "What about your other?"
But if they did, I'd tell them you're a

Stranger in India
I'm gonna be creeping on you so hard
You're seducing Tibetan pop stars and
Wrecking motor cars

I know it's true
This is wrong, love
When everything too expensive
Maybe in two years, you'll forgive me
And I'll have found my place somewhere
I'll be living kinder, oh

Stranger in India
I'm gonna be creeping on you so hard
You're seducing Tibetan pop stars and
Wrecking motor cars

A stranger in India
I'm doing okay so far
I'm just waiting on the feathers and tar
You're the only one
The only one

Nobody deserves you the way that I do
Nobody deserves you the way that I do
Nobody deserves you the way that I do
Nobody deserves you the way that I do

My stranger in India
Waiting on you is too hard
The reason I haven't written anything is because
I'm doing all that bad shit I was

My love is average
I obey an average law
My love is average
I obey an average law, law, law
