Background

For a long time, very little was known about Sympathetic Flypaper. The EP was briefly mentioned in one Soundcloud interview by Dominic Angelella, where he explained that he sought out Quinlan in the first place after hearing the record from a friend.

After being considered lost for many years, on July 7th, 2025, u/Level-Expression-883 uploaded the tracks online after finding the CD in their mother's belongings, as she had played with the band in their early days.

"I found this in 2021 in a box of my moms demos. She didn't recognize it then but now that she's making music again says she played a show with them [...] I didn't know this was lost media or that anyone was looking for it, I would've posted it a lot sooner!"

It is unclear if the record was released in 2003 or 2004; the CD pouch itself says 2004, but the CD's data says the disc was released in 2003. Nonetheless, this EP, being released in 2003-2004, predates what was considered to be the bands first EP, Songs of the Sea: Semi Nautical Themes.

Trivia

  • "For the Bonsai Tree U Bought 4 Me" was leaked far prior to the rest of the tracks on the EP, surfacing as early as 2012 online.
  • The cover art was done by hand, so it likely looks at least somewhat different from copy to copy.
  • This EP contains both the shortest and longest Hop Along tracks, with "Thirst-Y" being only 12 seconds long, and "Marine Life Epilogue...." being over 20 minutes in length.
